Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world's longest suspension span. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor.

Tornado May Have Hit Brooklyn

NEW YORK (AP) -- A big wind went through Bay Ridge, Brooklyn knocking over giant trees onto cars parked along Bay Ridge Avenue. Residents in the neighborhood said they were awakened around 6 a.m. by car alarms, thunder and loud winds.

News video from the scene shows several trees ripped out of the ground lying on top of cars.

Meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki with the National Weather Service says they will be sending an investigator to the scene to determine if it was a tornado.

One man told New York One he never could have thought this could happen in New York -- `` he said ``Kansas maybe, but not here.''

Although the Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and Nassau County between 6 a.m and 7 a.m., the wind that went through Bay Ridge was not immediately characterized as a tornado.

Ciemnecki says Bay Ridge was the only area to report such heavy wind damage.
